Rain washes out Post 11 ... twice in 24-hour period
Mother Nature, yet again, forced another evening of postponements involving Area I East Division American Senior Legion members Wayne County Post 11 and Snow Hill Post 94 on Tuesday. Residual rain remained this morning in certain sections of eastern North Carolina and affected at least one game scheduled for today.
Four division contests and one non-conference affair were rained out Tuesday -- Wayne County at Kinston, Beaufort at Snow Hill, Pitt County 160 at Wilson, Edenton at Ahoskie and Smithfield at Nash County. At noon Wednesday, Pitt 39 coach Mike Mullis phoned Post 11 coach Brad Reaves and said this morning's rain made field conditions unplayable.
Reaves said early Wednesday afternoon that no make-up date has been announced. Post 11 also has rained out contests against New Bern and Kinston, but have no open dates remaining on its schedule. Wayne County (15-4) is in the midst of playing 10 games in as many days with a home matchup Thursday evening against Kinston.
"I don't know what we're going to do," said third-year Post 11 coach Brad Reaves. "Everybody is in the same boat."
As of press time, just two of Tuesday's rainouts had been rescheduled.
Veteran Post 94 coach James "Rabbit" Fulghum phoned the Area I commissioner to receive permission to play Beaufort July 5 -- one day after the regular season ends. Fulghum said in a voicemail that Snow Hill, currently riding a five-game losing streak, will "most likely play" next Tuesday.
Snow Hill (6-9) entertains Nash County at 7 p.m. today and needs to win to stay among the top eight teams. The Area I East playoffs begin July 6. The first two rounds are best-of-three series with the East final slated for a best-of-five.
Wayne County (15-4) has games to make up against New Bern and Kinston with no open dates remaining on its schedule. Post 11 is in the middle of a 10-game stretch in as many days.
The Edenton-Ahoskie game has been moved to Friday.
Wilson Post 13 coach Rusty Dail said Tuesday evening that he is running out of home playing dates and is attempting to play a doubleheader with Edenton and Pitt County 160 later this week. Post 13 shares Fleming Stadium with the Wilson Tobs, a Coastal Plain League organization.
